Day 1. Departed Hearth at first light. Shrike signed us off himself. Four of us: me, Dunn, Pell, Carro. The salvaged auto-sled running clean, miraculously. Road east is passable - drifts at the two-hour mark but nothing the sled can’t push through. Cold but no wind.
Day 2. Reached the survey markers. Cydonian site is still intact: walls standing, not collapsed. Good sign. Dunn found a sealed antechamber behind the freight room. Three crates, two locked. Pell got one open. Carro got the other. Good haul. Loading tomorrow.
Day 3. Packed and strapped. Heavier than expected. Sled’s holding. Heading home.
Day 4. Easy travel. Crew in good spirits. Dunn keeps asking what the shield and the goggles. I told him to wait for the Seer to look at them. He asked again at dinner.
Day 5. Something on the road ahead. First light— hard to see. Figures. Walking together, same pace, same stride, maybe eight or ten of them. We slowed down. Dunn signaled. They didn’t respond, so we came closer.
They turned to look at us all at once.
We stopped the sled. Pell said we should go around. Carro said—
